“The world is indeed full of peril, and in it there are many dark places; but still there is much that is fair, and though in all lands love is now mingled with grief, it grows perhaps the greater.”
― J.R.R. Tolkien
Every time I take my car in, I have a juicy convo with my mechanic whom I love dearly. Last week when I asked him how he was doing, he emphatically said, “Well, I think the world is 100% F*&KED!!”
After I listened to why he said that, I told him I can understand
why he feels that way and also that I beg to differ.
His eyebrows raised and he said, “Really, why, how do you not feel like sh*t about all that is going down in the world?!!”
I assured him that sometimes I do, especially if I spend too much time watching the news. Although I do allow myself to feel the heaviness of it all, I also notice I prefer to focus on the light in the world. “What light?!” he asked. “YOU, for example!!” I replied.
I went on to describe my experience of him, of his light, and I want to tell you about him. Every single time I have been in his shop for the past 17 years I feel lighter and happier when I leave. He always asks how I’m doing, about Steve and the boys, about a trip he remembered we were taking.
It’s not just me, I watch him doing it with others too. He truly cares and I feel it. It is that simple, he cares and takes time, even though he is busy. And guess what happens, his light spreads! I tell people about him, I write him thank you cards, and bring him holiday snacks and I am not the only one. I know others who do the same.
Although he laughed at me when I told him this, it is true. The world isn’t 100% F*&cked, because of people like Blair.
Because of people like you too! Just by being you, you are shining light into this world. So, feel the feels and then look for and be the light, it is there. Pay attention to where you are looking, it makes a difference in what you will see.
